Seiko Prospex 39.5MM Alpinist SPB119
The Seiko Prospex Alpinist SPB119 features a matte white dial with silver accents. It's a surprisingly monochromatic look that is likely the most versatile of the 2020 line-up. While the Alpinist has historically been known for its use of color, the SPB119 offers a softer and more subtle take on the traditional Alpinist aesthetic. It's paired with a black leather strap with white stitching, which coordinates well with the dial color. The usage of the Alpinist's classic cathedral hands works really well here, as the more ornate handset matches the dressier vibe of the SPB119.
Seiko has placed the fan-favorite Alpinist collection within the premium Prospex family of hard-wearing sports watches a fact indicated on the white dial of this watch by the stylized "X" logo above six o'clock. There is also an applied magnifying lens placed over the three o'clock date window, something that was used in a selection of Alpinist watches from the 1990s but disappeared soon after the new millennium rolled around. The sapphire crystal has been slightly updated as well, with a new anti-reflective coating on its interior. But the most important new addition for Seiko fans will come with the movement inside. Where the previous generation of Seiko Alpinists was powered by the 6R15 caliber, the new Alpinist has received the updated 6R35 movement, released in 2019, that offers an impressive 70-hour power reserve. This is an automatic movement that hacks and can be manually wound.
